Key figures in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are reportedly stepping up efforts to bring back former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi into the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
According to The Whistler, party leaders are exploring the possibility of a Jonathan–Obi alliance. The plan, sources said, is to present either Jonathan or Obi as the PDP’s presidential candidate while the other plays a strategic role in the campaign.
“For instance, if Jonathan emerges as the presidential candidate, Obi would be tasked with leading the campaign in the South East. But if Obi is chosen, Jonathan would spearhead the campaign in the South-South,” the source explained.
The insider added that PDP leaders believe such a partnership is crucial to the party’s survival and relevance in the next general elections.
“Our leaders are working hard to ensure that the two influential politicians remain and work together in the PDP for the party’s victory. It’s all about the revival and survival of our party beyond 2027. The PDP can’t go far in the 2027 presidential election if Jonathan and Obi end up on opposing platforms,” the source said.
Confirming the development, former Jigawa State Governor and long-serving PDP chieftain, Alhaji Sule Lamido, told the BBC on Wednesday that he is personally involved in the reconciliation efforts to bring Jonathan, Obi, and other estranged members back into the party.
